Photoprotection, e.g., the use of sunscreen, reduces the development of keratinocyte cancers and melanoma. The concerns about the environmental effects of some organic UVR filters have prompted several locations worldwide to pass legislation forbidding incorporating these ingredients in sunscreens. Likewise, the health effects of several organic UVR filters are also debated and a recent proposal by the US FDA has caused public confusion about the safety of sunscreens.

Narla S and Lim HW, in their study, discussed FDA regulation of sunscreens and reviewed the environmental and health impacts of oxybenzone and octinoxate. At last, as dermatologists, they recommended continuing to encourage people to follow proper photoprotection behaviors, including photoprotective dresses, seeking shade while outdoors, and applying sunscreen generously to exposed areas.

They also advised inorganic/mineral UVR filter (namely, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide)-containing sunscreens for people concerned about the potential environmental and health effects of organic UVR filters.
